About Lazonby Swimming Pool and Campsite
Lazonby Pool
Lazonby Swimming Pool was originally built in 1964 following a fundraising campaign by Mr John Hume, the local headmaster of Lazonby School. The campaign focused on the need to provide safer swimming facilities for the surrounding community, in particular local school children, and was built with donations and help from the local community, in particular the villages of Lazonby, Kirkoswald and Great Salkeld. We continue to maintain strong links with local schools with many of the surrounding primary schools using it as their base for swimming lessons.
Since its opening the pool has been run and managed by a team of local volunteers, with support from a dedicated team of lifeguards and cleaning staff. In 2008 the pool established a registered charity and limited company to manage the affairs of the pool. The charity’s aim is to continue to provide a place for local children to learn to swim and provide a recreational facility to the wider community.
Lazonby Pool has a long history of minimising its impact on the environment. Our pool is heated using a thermal heat pump, originally installed in 1982, taking energy directly from the local river and we have been using thermal solar panels to heat our showers for the past 20 years! We’re currently investigating the possibility of installing solar PV panels to meet our electricity needs.
