Green energy?

You may have heard, in recent months, about devices called 'Heat Pumps'. These are becoming quite the fashion, with TV programmes like Grand Designs featuring ground-source heat pumps as a way of saving money on domestic heating bills. Essentially they work by extracting heat from one place (e.g. under the lawn) and concentrating it in another - rather like a fridge running in reverse!

Years ahead!

Lazonby Swimming Pool has been heated by a Heat Pump for decades! You can read the full story here, but the gist of it is this: during the summer months when the pool is open, thermal energy is taken from the River Eden (don't worry, the cooling of the river water is immeasurably small!) and used to heat the pool to a rather pleasant 25 degrees C. There is still an energy cost in terms of running the compressor/pump, but this energy is being used to 'move' heat rather than 'make' it. solarshowers.jpg (50238 bytes)This means that the whole system is very efficient and costs a lot less to run than a system that might use a boiler or immersion heater.

Solar showers, too!

As you can see from the photo, we are now also the proud owners of some solar (thermal) panels which are very effective at heating water for the showers in our changing rooms.
